Iraq’s Euphrates River Reaches Historic Low, Cities Face Water Shortage

Baghdad:Iraq’s historic **Euphrates River** has dropped to its lowest levels in decades, leaving major cities **Najaf and Samawah** almost without water. According to international media, Iraq is battling severe drought, rising temperatures, and long-standing water scarcity, with only **35% of its water share** from the Euphrates currently available.

Experts warn that water reserves in artificial lakes have fallen to historic lows, further threatening Iraq’s ecology. The crisis has not only worsened drinking water shortages but also damaged water quality and endangered aquatic life. Spontaneous water plants, each absorbing around **5 liters daily**, are depleting resources while blocking sunlight and oxygen, causing irreversible harm to the ecosystem.
