Pakistan’s Solar Revolution Underway; 60% Renewable Energy Target Set for 2030: Awais Leghari

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has said that Pakistan is moving rapidly towards a solar revolution, with a target of generating 60% of its energy mix from renewable sources by 2030.

Addressing the inaugural meeting of the ECO Clean Energy Center (CECECO) Board of Governors virtually, Leghari highlighted that renewable energy currently contributes more than 42% to Pakistan’s grid capacity. He noted that 5.8 GW of solar capacity has been added through net metering for households and businesses, while last year, over half of the country’s electricity was produced from clean energy sources.

“Pakistan welcomes the operational launch of the ECO Clean Energy Center,” he said, calling it the need of the hour. He added that Pakistan is fully utilizing its vast wind, hydropower, and solar energy potential and that nearly all new energy projects in the country are based on clean energy technologies.

Leghari further stated that Pakistan has created an investor-friendly policy and regulatory framework to encourage private sector participation and is promoting micro-grids and decentralized systems in rural areas.

He stressed that Pakistan is ready to share its experiences and successes with member states, expressing confidence that CECECO will become a hub for investment and technology in the region.

“This institution will foster cross-border energy exchanges, joint infrastructure, and integrated green grids,” he said, adding that through collective efforts, a safe and sustainable energy future for the region can be achieved.
