Guddu Barrage Water Flow Normal but Super Flood Threat Persists: Sharjeel Memon

Karachi: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that water flow at Guddu Barrage remains normal for now, but the threat of a potential super flood has not yet passed.

Speaking to the media after visiting the Sindh Rain and Flood Emergency Monitoring Cell, Memon stressed that there is no need to stop floodwaters or create breaches, adding that “weather forecasts by the Met Department are often unreliable.”

He said the monitoring cell, established on the directives of the Chief Minister, is operating round the clock with representatives from the Health Department, Environment Department, and Rescue 1122 present on site.

The minister revealed that in the past 24 hours, more than **28,000 people were evacuated** from riverine (katcha) areas, bringing the total to 94,000 evacuees. Around **2.4 million livestock are at risk**, while 300,000 animals have already been relocated and 600,000 vaccinated.

Memon added that relief camps are fully functional with necessary facilities, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto will begin his visit to flood-affected areas in Punjab today to oversee relief efforts.

Criticizing India, he said, “India continues its water aggression, and its intentions toward Pakistan have never been good. Dams must be built with great care, and at this stage, long-term planning is crucial. We will make future decisions in consultation with water experts.”

The minister further said that those who have never even seen a river are making big statements, while the government’s arrangements are visible to everyone.

Earlier, Memon was briefed at the Flood Emergency Monitoring Cell by Environment Secretary Zubair Channa.
