Sindh Braces for 800,000–1.1 Million Cusecs of Floodwater, Saving Lives Top Priority: CM Murad Ali Shah

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister **Murad Ali Shah** has warned that between **800,000 to 1.1 million cusecs of floodwater** are expected to enter Sindh, stressing that the government’s top priority is to **save human lives**, followed by protecting livestock.

Speaking at a press conference at the New Secretariat alongside **Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon**, the CM said the **National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)** had informed the provincial government about the incoming flood threat. He added that a flow of 900,000 cusecs is considered a “super flood,” for which preparations are being made.

The chief minister said the provincial irrigation department was confident that water from the upstream could be passed safely through **Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri barrages**, though river embankments could still suffer damage at vulnerable points. Shah noted that after the devastating 2010 floods, significant strengthening work had been done on dykes, which are now withstanding heavier flows.

Referring to his recent visits to Guddu and Sukkur barrages, Shah said:

> “Previously, embankments would break under 250,000 to 300,000 cusecs, but this year, they withstood 550,000 cusecs without damage.”

The CM further stated that Sindh authorities were closely monitoring the situation. Water reaching **Panjnad** on September 3–4 would indicate the level expected at Guddu barrage, with the flow taking two days to reach Sindh.

Shah emphasized that all relevant institutions, including the **Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA)** and the **health department**, had been mobilized. He also inspected the **Flood Control Room** at the Secretariat, which is digitally monitoring river conditions.

At present, he said, **550,965 cusecs** of water were recorded at **Tirmu**, already at a “very high flood” level, while **16,290 cusecs** were flowing at **Balloki**.

Directing **Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah**, the CM instructed all district administrations to remain on **high alert**.
