Sindh High Court Expresses Anger at NADRA Over Non-Issuance of CNIC to Woman

KARACHI:The Sindh High Court (SHC) expressed strong displeasure over the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) officials for failing to issue a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) to a woman despite court orders.
During the hearing of a contempt petition, Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro remarked that NADRA’s behavior towards the public was inappropriate and questioned the effectiveness of its verification and scrutiny system.
When NADRA’s representative stated that tokens are issued to citizens, the court noted that people often face unnecessary hurdles, including being told that staff are “on lunch break,” which causes inconvenience to the public.
Justice Kalhoro warned that if such practices continued, the court could summon NADRA officials and keep them waiting just as citizens are made to suffer. He further questioned why the zonal board could not even complete the verification process as directed by the court.
The SHC ordered NADRA to convene a meeting of the zonal board immediately to verify the petitioner’s case and report back on whether her CNIC can be issued. The court also directed NADRA to submit a progress report within 15 days.
