Hiba Ali Khan Speaks Out on Gender Inequality: “I Still Don’t Have the Freedom My Brother Had at 12

LAHORE – Pakistani actress Hiba Ali Khan has opened up about the gender-based restrictions she faces despite being an independent working woman. In a candid podcast interview, the actress discussed the deep-rooted societal double standards that continue to limit women, even in modern times.
I work in the industry, I drive my own car, I wear what I want—but even today, I don’t have the kind of freedom my brother had when he was just 12,” said Hiba. She highlighted the cultural hypocrisy where daughters are repeatedly told, “It’s not you we don’t trust, it’s the world,” a narrative that she believes suppresses women under the guise of protection.
Hiba also questioned why a girl having a male friend is still treated with suspicion in many households. “If I say a male friend was talking to me, everyone at home immediately gets alarmed. Why is it so hard to accept that a man and a woman can be just friends?”
She pointed out the irony that women are often judged the harshest—by other women. “It’s strange that women themselves get uncomfortable seeing other women express themselves freely, and then take out their frustration on men.”
Through her bold and honest remarks, Hiba shed light on how societal norms continue to create unequal opportunities for women, starting from childhood. Her interview is being seen as a powerful critique of long-standing traditions that discourage true gender equality.
The conversation has sparked debate online, with many praising Hiba for addressing an issue that resonates with countless women across South Asia and beyond.
