Sindh High Court Rebukes Police for Alleged Looting, Demands Investigation Into Missing Person Case

Karachi: Sindh High Court Judge, Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput, sharply criticized the police during a hearing on a case concerning the recovery of a missing person from Shah Latif Town, Karachi. The judge remarked that if the police had their way, they would not only investigate but also loot homes, stating, “If they could, the police would take everything from people’s homes, not just investigate.”
The hearing, presided over by Justice Rajput, involved the recovery of a man named Musawir Hussain, who was allegedly detained by the police, with claims of looting at his residence during the process. The complainant alleged that the police seized jewelry and his brother’s motorcycle during the arrest. The police, however, stated that the missing person was involved in robbery cases and that the motorcycle had been found abandoned and linked to a bank robbery worth Rs. 50 million.
During the hearing, Justice Rajput expressed his disbelief, questioning how the police could trace a motorcycle’s involvement through geo-fencing technology. “If the police had their way, they would take everything from homes. Just because a car is parked outside doesn’t make it abandoned,” he said. He further reprimanded the police, saying, “If you want to act according to your whims, then declare society a jungle, where only those with sticks hold power, and the law is whatever they decide.”
Justice Rajput instructed the police to focus on conducting a proper investigation without looting people’s property, warning that strict orders would be issued if they failed to do so. He emphasized that police officers’ jobs and postings could be impacted if they continued to act in such a manner. “If we are in a civilized society, it functions through institutions,” he added.
The court directed the investigation officers to update the court on their progress, scheduling the next hearing for August 22.
