Court Orders Police to Respond on Petition for Release of Man Detained for Using Offensive Language Against Punjab CM and Army Chief

Lahore: A petition has been filed in the sessions court by Umar, the son of Sajid Nawaz, who was allegedly detained by the police for using offensive language against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the Army Chief.
According to Dawn News, the Additional and Sessions Judge, Ghulam Fareed, issued a notice to the police and sought a response by July 15. The court directed that if the detainee is in police custody, he should be presented before the court safely the next day.
The petitioner’s lawyer, Advocate Sameer Khan Khattak and Advocate Nauman Sarwar Dogar, argued that Sajid Nawaz had been unlawfully detained by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Johar Town police station for two days without being presented before any court or charged with a crime.
In his petition, Umar claimed that the police had arrested his father two days ago, and despite there being no case filed against him, they were holding him in custody. Furthermore, the police allegedly made Sajid Nawaz record apology videos, which were later shared on social media.
Umar has requested the court to issue an order for the release of his father.
The judge issued a notice to the police and instructed them to respond by July 15. The court further ordered that if Sajid Nawaz is in police custody, he should be safely presented in court the following day. The case was then adjourned until the next day.
It is important to note that a video recently went viral showing Sajid Nawaz riding a motorcycle through water accumulated on the road after rainfall. In the video, he used objectionable and offensive language against the Army Chief and the Punjab Chief Minister. Following the viral video, the police took Sajid Nawaz into custody, and a subsequent video surfaced on social media in which he apologized for his actions, describing them as inappropriate.
