PM Shehbaz Sharif Abolishes PTV Fee from Electricity Bills, Highlights Rs500 Billion Annual Power Theft

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the removal of the PTV license fee from electricity bills, citing it as part of broader reforms to ease the financial burden on consumers. Speaking at the launch ceremony of the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” mobile application, he also revealed that Pakistan suffers from electricity theft worth Rs500 billion annually — calling it a major national challenge.
Addressing the event, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for urgent action to curb power theft, stating, “We must act swiftly to reduce electricity theft, which is a significant drain on national resources.” He highlighted the reforms undertaken within the power sector, including merit-based appointments in DISCOs (distribution companies) and strong action against corrupt mafias.
He acknowledged that although some reforms have been implemented, the sector still requires substantial improvement. Praising the efforts of the Ministry of Energy and its task force, he said they had worked tirelessly to reduce electricity tariffs and address the circular debt issue.
The Prime Minister noted that global oil prices had declined, and the government capitalized on this opportunity by reducing the electricity price by Rs7.50 per unit. He also mentioned concerns over a potential 70 paisa increase in electricity rates, which the government successfully avoided through alternative measures.
Shehbaz Sharif encouraged the nationwide rollout of the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” app — which allows users to submit their own meter readings — from Peshawar to Karachi, and requested further innovation within the platform. The app has been introduced in five regional languages to enhance accessibility.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to minimizing electricity losses and improving transparency within the power sector.
