Pre-Monsoon Rains Expected Across Pakistan from June 20: Authorities Issue Alerts

Islamabad: Pre-monsoon rains are set to begin across Pakistan starting from June 20, according to a forecast issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The rain spell is expected to continue intermittently until June 23, bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing intense heat.
According to PMD, moist currents from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea will penetrate the upper and central regions of the country during this period. Additionally, a western disturbance is likely to affect the upper parts of Pakistan from June 20.
From June 20 to 23, scattered thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rainfall are expected in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Peshawar. Some areas may also experience heavy rain and hailstorms.
Between June 21 and 23, rain and windstorms are forecasted for Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kalat, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Sahiwal. Additionally, between June 22 and 24, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, and Jacobabad are also likely to receive rain accompanied by thunder and dust storms.
The PMD has warned of possible damage to power lines, trees, vehicles, and solar panels due to strong winds, thunder, and heavy rainfall in Islamabad and other northern and central areas. However, the rain is expected to bring a significant drop in temperature, providing relief from the ongoing heatwave.
In response to the forecast, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning to commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province. The PDMA stated that this year’s monsoon is expected to bring 25% more rain than usual, with localized increases of up to 40–60% in cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Rawalpindi.
The PDMA has instructed district administrations to launch public awareness campaigns and issue alerts in villages near rivers and streams. Announcements through mosques have also been recommended to ensure timely dissemination of information at the local level.
