Glenn Maxwell Announces Sudden Retirement from ODI Cricket Citing Physical Strain

Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his sudden retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, citing ongoing physical challenges and his body’s inability to cope with the demanding 50-over format.

Maxwell revealed that he began reconsidering his ODI future during the Champions Trophy earlier this year in Lahore, where playing on a hard and uneven outfield took a visible toll on his body. The situation worsened in the following match, where fielding on a slippery surface made it clear to him that he could no longer endure the physical demands of the format.

“If the conditions aren’t ideal, my body simply can’t handle the pressure of 50 overs anymore,” Maxwell said.

Over his 149-match ODI career, Maxwell scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, including four centuries and 23 half-centuries. He also took 77 wickets and boasts a staggering strike rate of 126.7 — the second-highest in ODI history.

His unforgettable 201-run knock against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the greatest innings in ODI history.

Maxwell clarified that he will continue to represent Australia in T20 Internationals and remain active in franchise cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Big Bash League (BBL).

“I didn’t want to take up space in the squad just for personal gain. It’s better to give younger players a chance to prepare for the 2027 World Cup,” Maxwell added.

Australian chief selector George Bailey praised Maxwell, calling him one of the most exciting players in ODI cricket history due to his natural talent, energy, and game-changing abilities. Bailey also emphasized that Maxwell will continue to play a key role in Australia’s T20 plans, especially in preparation for the T20 World Cup next year.
