Gawadar Faces Water Crisis as Sawad Dam Reaches Dead Level, Authorities Begin Emergency Pumping

Gawadar:One of Gawadar’s primary water reservoirs, Sawad Dam, has officially crossed its dead level, prompting an urgent response from the Public Health Engineering Department. In an effort to maintain water supply to the city, authorities have begun extracting water through motor turbine pumping.
This was confirmed by Executive Engineer (XEN) Momin Baloch, who said the department is utilizing all available technical resources to extract the remaining water and address the critical water shortage. Despite the dam dropping below its operational level, emergency measures are underway to ensure that basic water needs of the residents are met.
Engineer Momin Baloch emphasized that the department is working on a war footing and urged all citizens, including public and private institutions, hotels, restaurants, car wash centers, and other commercial users, to drastically reduce water consumption.
“This is a time for collective responsibility. Every drop counts. Unnecessary water usage must be avoided, taps should not be left open, and non-essential activities like car washing should be suspended immediately,” he urged. He further called for institutional-level water-saving measures.
Gawadar has been experiencing an intensifying water crisis due to months of little to no rainfall, a growing population, and a sharp increase in water demand. Experts warn that if alternative water sources are not identified and implemented immediately, the city could face a severe water emergency in the coming days.
Concerned citizens and civic groups have called on the government to prioritize the crisis at the national level. They demand swift execution of long-term plans, including the construction of new dams and the launch of sustainable water supply schemes to safeguard the city’s future.
