Short-Term Sleep Deprivation Can Trigger Heart Risks, Warns New Study

UPPSALA, SWEDEN:Scientists have raised fresh alarms about the **serious health consequences of sleep deprivation**, especially for heart health. A **new study by researchers at Uppsala University** reveals that sleeping just **four hours per night for three consecutive nights** can lead to **dangerous changes in blood composition**, increasing the risk of **cardiovascular disease**.

The study focused on **inflammatory proteins** in the blood—molecules that are produced when the body is under stress or fighting infection. When these proteins remain elevated for extended periods, they can **damage blood vessels** and heighten the risk of **heart failure, coronary artery disease,** and **atrial fibrillation** (irregular heartbeat).

Researchers conducted the study with **16 healthy young men**, who were housed in a controlled lab environment. Their food intake, physical activity, and exposure to light were carefully monitored to ensure accurate results.

Participants followed two sleep routines:

* **Normal sleep**: 8.5 hours per night for three nights
* **Sleep restriction**: 4.25 hours per night for three nights

After each sleep cycle, the men performed a brief but intense cycling workout. Blood samples were taken **before and after the exercise**.

The findings revealed that **lack of sleep increased inflammatory markers**, even in otherwise healthy individuals. Additionally, the body’s production of beneficial proteins—normally elevated after exercise—was significantly **reduced following sleep deprivation**. Researchers also noted that **protein levels fluctuated more dramatically throughout the day** when sleep was lacking, further underscoring how poor sleep can disrupt essential biological rhythms.

The study concludes that **even short-term sleep deprivation** can have **serious implications for heart health**, reinforcing the need for consistent, adequate sleep to maintain overall well-being.

Health experts recommend **7–9 hours of quality sleep per night** for adults to reduce long-term risks of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
