US-Based Pakistani Delegation Returns to Pursue Imran Khan’s Release Through Quiet Diplomacy

ISLAMABAD:A group of Pakistani-American doctors and businessmen involved in backchannel efforts for Imran Khan’s release has once again arrived in Pakistan, signaling a renewed push to secure relief for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder through informal diplomatic channels.
Sources confirm that the group, which had previously visited Islamabad and met a senior government official as well as Imran Khan in jail a few months ago, is currently in Lahore. However, they have so far been unsuccessful in securing a meeting with the incarcerated former prime minister during their latest visit. It also remains unclear whether they have engaged with any senior government representatives on this trip.
Observers consider the delegation’s upcoming meetings next week to be potentially crucial, as the efforts are seen as part of broader attempts by PTI supporters and overseas Pakistanis to influence Imran Khan’s legal and political trajectory.
Despite several informal contacts in recent months, no significant breakthrough has been reported. According to insiders familiar with the matter, the success of such initiatives largely depends not only on political dialogue but also on PTI’s digital messaging, particularly its tone on social media and the rhetoric used by its international chapters, especially in the U.S. and UK.
The military establishment has repeatedly asserted that it will not engage in direct talks with political parties, instead urging them to resolve their issues among themselves. Nevertheless, some PTI leaders are believed to be maintaining behind-the-scenes communication with key figures despite these public declarations.
Sources add that PTI’s persistent criticism of the military through official social media accounts and affiliated international chapters remains a major hurdle in any potential reconciliation. Misinformation campaigns and lobbying efforts in Washington and London have further strained relations.
Privately, some second-tier PTI leaders acknowledge that such confrontational tactics have backfired, particularly undermining initiatives aimed at securing legal relief for Imran Khan. There is growing internal consensus within the party that its aggressive digital posture may need to be softened to enable meaningful negotiations and ease tensions with state institutions.
Political analysts believe that any positive shift in PTI’s fortunes — and a possible reduction in pressure on Imran Khan — is contingent upon the party adopting a more constructive approach, refraining from disrupting economic recovery efforts, and halting its attacks on national institutions.
As overseas Pakistanis once again attempt to establish contact with Pakistani authorities, analysts are closely watching whether this marks the beginning of a new phase of reconciliation — or yet another missed opportunity for the embattled party.
