Allegations of Corruption Surface in Balochistan Government’s Solar Panel Scheme for Farmers

Khuzdar, Balochistan — Serious allegations of irregularities have emerged in the Balochistan government’s solar panel scheme aimed at shifting agricultural tube wells to solar energy. The initiative, intended to relieve farmers from frequent electricity load-shedding, involved disbursements of Rs. 2 million per farmer across the province, including the Khuzdar district.

According to reports, only 30–40% of the farmers in Khuzdar and nearby areas have allegedly received partial benefits from the scheme. However, numerous complaints have surfaced claiming fraudulent activities and financial misconduct.

Several farmers allege that their bank accounts were tampered with, and the funds allocated in their names were diverted to unknown accounts. In some cases, advance cheques of Rs. 200,000 were allegedly taken from farmers under the pretext of system installation. Others were reportedly made to sign stamp papers agreeing to give away half of the allocated funds to third parties.

Accusations point towards certain members of farmer unions, who are said to have played a key role in the misappropriation of funds. Some farmers reported deductions in the name of paperwork, file charges, and other unofficial expenses, amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees.

Shockingly, despite being deprived of the solar systems, several farmers also had their electricity connections cut, leaving their fields without water and light. Crops are reportedly dying, and farmers are facing the risk of losing their only source of livelihood.

Affected farmers are now appealing to the Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Chief Secretary Balochistan, the Provincial Minister for Agriculture, and the Commissioner of Kalat Division to immediately halt Phase-II of the project. They demand a transparent investigation by an independent inquiry committee.

They have further urged that the list of all farmers who were supposed to receive funds under the solar scheme be made public. Additionally, they call on the Anti-Corruption Department to investigate the alleged violations in the Solar Energy Department and prosecute those involved in embezzling public funds meant for poor farmers.

The issue is fast gaining traction, with growing calls for accountability and justice for the affected agricultural community in Balochistan.
