No Pending Cases in China’s Supreme Court with 367 Judges, Says Chief Justice of Pakistan

Islamabad: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, revealed during a meeting with Supreme Court reporters that China’s Supreme Court has 367 judges and astonishingly, not a single case is pending there. He shared these insights following his recent official visit to China.
Justice Afridi stated that the Chinese judiciary was surprised to learn about the high number of pending cases in Pakistan. “They asked how we manage with such a backlog, and I told them – that’s exactly why we came to learn from you,” he said.
The Chief Justice emphasized the urgent need to enhance Pakistan’s judicial system through the integration of technology. “Improving our system is impossible without promoting the use of modern technology. However, technology is not a magic pill that can fix everything instantly,” he added.
He further noted that the effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judiciary requires complete and accurate data. “Without comprehensive data, AI cannot be implemented effectively,” he said.
Justice Afridi also highlighted that China, like Pakistan, operates through four judicial forums. He acknowledged having discussions with Indian judges during the visit, but declined to share details due to current geopolitical sensitivities.
Interestingly, the Chief Justice admitted that all five high courts in Pakistan are currently ahead of the Supreme Court in terms of technology adoption.
He concluded by stressing the importance of publicizing positive developments in the judiciary to restore public trust and accelerate reform efforts. “It’s crucial that the people hear good things about the judiciary during these times,” he said.
