Supreme Court Grants Bail to PTI Leaders Ejaz Chaudhry and Farhat Abbas in May 9 Cases

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has approved bail for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Senator Ejaz Chaudhry and granted pre-arrest bail to Hafiz Farhat Abbas in connection with the May 9 cases. The court directed Senator Chaudhry to submit surety bonds worth Rs. 100,000 in the trial court.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, including Justice Hashim Kakar and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, heard the case. During the proceedings, the special prosecutor alleged that Ejaz Chaudhry incited the public and was part of a conspiracy. However, Justice Afghan questioned the strength of the case, stating, “If the case was so strong, why didn’t you take it to the special court? You’ve already taken 600 people there. Enough is enough—how long will you drag this?”

The defense counsel informed the court that Ejaz Chaudhry has been in custody since May 11, 2023. Justice Afghan responded, “Bail cannot be used as a punishment.”

The Supreme Court then approved his bail and instructed him to submit bail surety to the trial court.

In a related hearing, the court granted pre-arrest bail to PTI leader Hafiz Farhat Abbas. His lawyer, Latif Khosa, cited that another co-accused, Imtiaz Shaikh, had already been granted pre-arrest bail. The special prosecutor claimed Abbas was part of the May 9 conspiracy and had been declared a fugitive by the trial court.

Justice Afghan remarked, “Whether he is a fugitive or not will be determined by the relevant court. The investigation is complete, and the challan has been submitted—what is the point of arresting him now?”

When the prosecutor promised to complete the trial in four months, Justice Afghan replied, “God willing you do. But please, stop dragging this any further.”
