UN Security Council Condemns Pahalgam Incident, But Fails to Meet India’s Expectations

The United Nations Security Council has condemned the recent incident in Pahalgam, located in Indian-occupied Kashmir, but **did not fulfill India’s desire** to issue a strong statement against Pakistan.

Thanks to **Pakistan’s effective diplomacy**, India’s efforts to push for harsh language — similar to the statement issued after the Pulwama attack — were unsuccessful.
While the Security Council condemned the incident, it **avoided using strong language** and refrained from directly blaming Pakistan.

Instead of mentioning India by name, the Security Council’s statement referred only to “**all relevant authorities**.”
The United States had proposed the draft statement, but a **unanimous agreement** could not be reached, and **Pakistan successfully ensured that contentious terms were excluded**.

Moreover, Pakistan managed to have the term “**Jammu and Kashmir**” included in the statement, while India had pushed for exclusive mention of “**Pahalgam**,” attempting to portray the region as an integral part of India.

India also failed to secure an immediate condemnation; while the attack occurred on **April 22**, the Security Council’s statement was issued **four days later on April 26**.

A UN official stated that the organization is “**closely monitoring the situation**” in the region with deep concern, and urged both India and Pakistan to **exercise maximum restraint** to avoid further escalation.
