Mayor of Turbat Appeals for Global Support on Local Democracy, Youth Leadership, and Sustainable Development

Turbat:Mayor of Turbat, Balakh Sher Qazi, made a compelling appeal for international collaboration on local democracy, youth leadership, and sustainable development during his speech at the 48th session of the European Congress held in Strasbourg, alongside the Asia-Pacific Local Governance Conference. The event saw participation from global representatives, including the Mayor of Lokosa from Africa and delegates from various European countries.

Mayor Qazi highlighted that although Turbat is a small city in terms of size, it is rich with potential and has emerged as a shining example of local democracy and sustainable development. He expressed his pride in presenting Turbat’s perspective on the world stage.

“Turbat reflects both challenges and bright opportunities,” he remarked. “The foundation of effective governance lies in local democracy, as policies are implemented in cities where the voice of the people is most impactful.”

Addressing the financial, administrative, and institutional obstacles faced by local governments in developing countries, Mayor Qazi shared that despite these challenges, Turbat has achieved remarkable successes. He proudly noted that Turbat is the city with the highest literacy rate in Balochistan, with youth playing a central role in decision-making. “More than 70% of the members of my council are young people, which is a testament to our commitment to entrusting the future to young leadership.”

Mayor Qazi stressed that the biggest barrier to local democracy is a lack of resources, particularly financial autonomy. “Without financial independence, local governments cannot effectively implement long-term planning and development projects.”

He appealed to the global community for the exchange of experiences, resources, and strategies to help overcome these challenges. On the issue of climate change, he emphasized that Turbat is severely affected by extreme heat, water scarcity, and changing weather patterns. “Our determination is strong, but the lack of technical expertise and financial resources is a major hindrance,” he said.

The Mayor also presented three key demands to the international delegates: scholarships for Turbat students at European universities, training programs for doctors and engineers, and capacity-building initiatives for local body members. He concluded by stating, “Investing in education and skills can transform Turbat into a hub of development, otherwise, we will fail in realizing our dreams.”
