Opposition Alliance Calls for National Agenda and Transparent Elections

In a significant development, opposition parties in Pakistan have agreed to form a steering committee to draft a national agenda aimed at enhancing mutual cooperation and addressing the country’s ongoing challenges. The decision was made during a dinner hosted by the leader of the Movement for the Protection of the Constitution, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, where opposition leaders discussed the current political situation and the prospects of a grand opposition alliance.
The opposition leaders emphasized that the country’s crisis situation demands that all democratic forces unite on a single platform to steer the nation out of the ongoing turmoil. According to the announcement from the Movement for the Protection of the Constitution, the steering committee will be led by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, with key members including Asad Qaiser, Shibli Faraz, Senator Kamran Murtaza, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Sajeed Tarin, Nasir Shirazi, Talmund Khan, and Akhundzada Hussain.
During their first meeting, the opposition leaders reiterated their demand for immediate, free, and fair elections in the country, and called for the resignation of the Election Commission. They also urged the formation of an independent commission to oversee the electoral process.
The opposition condemned the ongoing violations of basic human rights in the country, demanding the immediate release of political prisoners, including Imran Khan. In addition, they stressed that the nation’s survival should be prioritized over political differences, urging all parties to rise above political interests and focus on the country’s integrity and well-being.
The opposition leaders also expressed grave concern over the current economic crisis, stressing that a lack of the rule of law and justice undermines any efforts to improve the economy. They highlighted the need to address internal challenges first before tackling external issues.
Furthermore, the opposition raised alarms about the worsening security situation across the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, and criticized the federal government for its failure to protect the lives and property of the people.
The meeting, held in Islamabad, was attended by various opposition leaders, including Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Umar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Asad Qaiser, Raja Nasser Abbas, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and others. Junaid Akbar and Shehram Taraqai were also present, where discussions were held regarding a proposed draft for the opposition alliance and how to make the demand for general elections more impactful.
