Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal Expresses Disillusionment with Parliamentary Politics, Urges Change in Baloch Leadership

Gwadar (UNA)** – The leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP), Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal, has expressed his deep disillusionment with parliamentary politics in Pakistan, stating that the state has shut all avenues for political participation in Balochistan. According to Mengal, the only two paths left for Balochistan’s political future are either following Dr. Allah Nazar or Sardar Sifaraz Bugti. He emphasized that after forty years of attempts with all state institutions, no results have been achieved, leading him to abandon parliamentary politics altogether.

During an interview with a local TV channel, Mengal criticized the current state of the tribal system in Balochistan, pointing out that while many people criticize the tribal system, no viable alternative has emerged. He acknowledged that the system has flaws but argued that its positive aspects, such as providing justice and protecting the rights of the tribe, have been undermined over time.

Mengal also highlighted the role of tribal leaders, stating that the original purpose of the tribe’s leadership was not only to settle disputes but also to ensure the welfare and safety of the people. However, he lamented that today, tribal leaders are appointed by the government, weakening their role and undermining the autonomy of the tribes.

On the subject of “Nawab” titles, Mengal explained that this concept was introduced by the British during their colonial rule in the 19th century, and it did not exist in Baloch history before. He accused the state of using these titles and tribal leaders to weaken Baloch identity and culture.

Mengal also raised concerns about the attack on Baloch culture and traditions, which, according to him, the state is trying to erase in order to prevent Baloch from asserting their separate identity. He believes that the erosion of Baloch culture, language, and traditions could lead to the fragmentation of Balochistan’s unity and possibly drive the people towards separatism.

Furthermore, he criticized the current state of women’s safety in Balochistan, recalling that in the past, women in distress would seek refuge in a tribal leader’s home, but today, even women are not safe from the bodyguards of these leaders.

In his concluding remarks, Sardar Mengal pointed out that 99% of the tribal leaders in Balochistan are aligned with the state, and their support is being used to protect the state’s wrongful actions. He expressed his concern over the lack of true leadership in Balochistan and urged for a transformation in the political landscape of the province.

Sardar Mengal also addressed his party members, advising them to focus on the realities of Balochistan’s political system, stating that only those with substantial financial resources can now influence the parliamentary process. He also expressed support for the new generation of political leaders in Balochistan, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
