Leaders of Canada and Mexico Ready to Respond to Potential Heavy Tariffs by the U.S.

Leaders from Canada and Mexico have expressed their readiness to retaliate against potential heavy tariffs imposed by the United States.

According to foreign media reports, both countries have stated that U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to increase tariffs would harm collective security. However, if the U.S. moves forward with these measures, Canada and Mexico are prepared to take counteractions.

This comes after President Trump reiterated his threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico. Speaking with reporters at the White House, Trump said a decision would be made soon regarding whether to exclude oil imports from the tariffs or not.

These actions by the Republican president are causing alarm, with experts noting that such measures could also negatively impact global humanitarian aid efforts, particularly with the freezing of U.S. foreign aid.

Trump has warned both countries that if they do not halt the flow of illegal drugs and migrant arrivals, he will impose the 25% tariff.

It is worth mentioning that Canada and Mexico are the two largest exporters of crude oil to the U.S., but it remains unclear if crude oil will be included in the tariffs.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2023, Canada exported 3.9 million barrels per day (BPD) of crude oil to the U.S. out of total imports of 6.5 million BPD, while Mexico exported 733,000 BPD.

**Tariff’s Consequences Could be Dangerous for the U.S., Says Justin Trudeau**

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a meeting of the Canada-U.S. Council before any potential tariffs are implemented.

Trudeau stressed that the country is facing a critical moment and that if Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, the country will be ready to respond.

Speaking at a meeting of the newly established Canada-U.S. Relations Council in Toronto, Trudeau said that Canada’s response would be strong yet reasonable. He added that while this is not the outcome Canada desires, if Trump moves forward, Canada will take action.

Trudeau further stated that council members made it clear that American tariffs would have disastrous consequences for the U.S., including risking American jobs, raising prices for Americans, and damaging collective security.
