Junaid Akbar Khan Appointed PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Amid Internal Party Challenges

Islamabad:Junaid Akbar Khan, a known ideological leader and loyalist of Imran Khan, has been appointed as the new President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His appointment was confirmed by PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Junaid Akbar Khan himself.
Junaid Akbar’s appointment comes after a period of controversy within the party, especially following his removal from the position of focal person by PTI’s former president in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur. This removal was allegedly linked to internal party groupings and his support for former minister Shakeel Khan. Akbar Khan had opposed Gandapur’s decision to remove Shakeel Khan from the provincial cabinet, calling him an honest and corruption-free minister.
Junaid Akbar Khan, hailing from the Malakand region in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, entered the political arena in 2013, when he was elected as a member of the National Assembly on a PTI ticket. He was re-elected in 2018. After the PTI government’s collapse and the events of May 9, 2023, Akbar Khan found himself in the midst of political scrutiny, facing multiple FIRs and imprisonment.
Despite pressure to leave PTI, Junaid Akbar remained loyal to the party and Imran Khan. He contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate after PTI was unable to secure the election symbol. He won the NA-9 Malakand seat by a significant margin and later joined the Sunni Ittehad Council as per party directives.
However, Akbar Khan’s appointment as PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president is not without challenges. Analysts suggest that his close association with Aftab Khan and his past disagreements with Ali Amin Gandapur could lead to internal tensions. Junaid Akbar’s anti-establishment stance, which resonates with PTI workers, could make him a unifying figure for the party’s grassroots level, who are dissatisfied with Gandapur’s ties to the establishment.
Despite these challenges, Akbar Khan’s leadership is seen as a potential rallying point for PTI workers, especially in the wake of factionalism within the party. The coming months will reveal how well he navigates these internal dynamics, particularly with the influence of Gandapur’s group.
