Rawalpindi: Hafiz Naeem Rahman, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has initiated a protest against the recent surge in electricity prices on its fifth consecutive day today. Addressing a press conference in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, Rahman emphasized that the protest aims to highlight the plight of 25 crore people burdened by exorbitant electricity bills, making it increasingly difficult to afford children’s education and basic necessities.
Rahman demanded transparency regarding agreements with IPPs, accusing major political parties including the PPP, PML-N, and PTI of entering into undisclosed deals. He criticized the government’s inability to disclose these agreements, labeling it as incompetence and corruption that burdens the nation.
Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed and expressed gratitude for the protest, showing support for their demands. Rahman highlighted that agreements with IPPs commenced during the tenure of the PPP, and discussions with 35 companies occurred during the PTI government.
He further called for stringent measures to curb government officials and ministers from using vehicles with engine capacities exceeding 1300 cc, citing potential savings of Rs. 1350 billion. Rahman criticized the authorities for imposing burdensome taxes on the public while indulging in lavish expenditures.
Regarding economic policies, Rahman condemned the reliance on loans, stressing that Pakistan’s internal and external debts amount to a staggering 65 trillion rupees, benefiting banks at the expense of the nation’s welfare.
Warning of escalating protests if immediate actions are not taken, Rahman urged the government to avoid conflict and address their demands promptly. He announced plans to expand demonstrations nationwide, starting with protests outside Governor Houses in Karachi and Peshawar.
In conclusion, Rahman thanked PTI Chairman Bani and reaffirmed their stance to not align with any alliance, expressing disillusionment with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s shifting positions on constitutional issues and upcoming elections.
