Election Commission Appeals to High Court for Prompt Local Elections in Quetta
Quetta:The Election Commission has approached the High Court to expedite local elections in Quetta. According to sources, the term for local governments in Balochistan expired on January 27, 2019. While local elections have been completed across the province, elections in Quetta have been delayed due to various legal challenges.
Sources indicate that the Election Commission completed the delimitation of Quetta’s local councils in September of the previous year and announced the election schedule for October 19, 2023. However, the Balochistan High Court issued a stay order on the election schedule in response to petitions, which remains in effect. The final hearing on the matter is scheduled for July 25, 2024. The Election Commission has now filed a petition for an expedited hearing to resolve the issue.
