US-Iran Talks on Strait of Hormuz Continue as Trump Signals Hope, Warns of Military Action
Washington:Negotiations between the United States and Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz continued throughout the day, with US President Donald Trump describing the discussions as “encouraging” while also warning of severe military consequences if the strategic waterway remains closed.
Speaking to reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, President Trump said he was optimistic that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen soon following what he called productive talks.
Trump stated that the proposed agreement focuses on two key issues: restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a comprehensive resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He added that although significant progress had been made, several important issues still remain unresolved.
The US president also warned that Iran would face “serious consequences” if the strait is not reopened, saying the United States would respond with a very strong military strike if necessary.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, told Iranian state television that Tehran would not permit the establishment of any alternative maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz.
He further warned that any foreign warship or military force attempting to enter the area in violation of Iran’s conditions would be targeted.
Diplomatic sources said that negotiations mediated by Oman are considering a draft agreement that could restore commercial shipping through the strait. However, the two sides have yet to reach consensus on key issues, including maritime route management, inspections, transit fees, and security arrangements.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Any disruption to shipping through the strait has a direct impact on global energy markets and oil prices.
