Sindh Assures Balochistan of Additional Water Supply to Kirthar Canal from Sukkur Barrage

Gandakha: The Sindh government has assured Balochistan that an additional 400 to 500 cusecs of water will be released immediately from Sukkur Barrage into the Kirthar Canal to help address the ongoing irrigation crisis affecting agricultural areas in Balochistan.

The assurance was given during a meeting between Sindh’s Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and a delegation of Balochistan ministers, including Livestock Minister Sardarzada Mir Faisal Khan Jamali, Irrigation Minister Mir Muhammad Sadiq Umrani, Mir Muhammad Saleem Khosa, and Mir Muhammad Khan Lehri. Senior officials from the Sindh Irrigation Department also attended the meeting.

The participants discussed the shortage of irrigation water in the Kirthar Canal, particularly in Nasirabad Division, Usta Muhammad, and other farming regions where rice and other crops are reportedly facing severe water stress.

The Balochistan delegation said prolonged shortages had placed thousands of acres of standing crops at risk and urged that the province receive its constitutional and legally allocated share of water without interruption.

Responding to the concerns, Jam Khan Shoro assured the delegation that 400–500 additional cusecs of water would be released into the Kirthar Canal immediately. He also stated that Balochistan’s water share would be protected and that additional supplies would be provided whenever water availability allowed.

Both sides also agreed to maintain close coordination on water management and to pursue a joint strategy for the equitable distribution of water in accordance with constitutional principles, with the aim of safeguarding farmers’ interests and minimizing further losses to the agricultural sector.
