Hamid Mir Criticizes Former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa Over His Tenure
Islamabad: Senior Pakistani journalist and television anchor Hamid Mir has strongly criticized former Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, saying that history would judge his tenure harshly.
In a post on the social media platform X, Mir recalled that when a presidential reference was filed against Justice Qazi Faez Isa in 2019, he and many others publicly defended the judge and opposed the government of then-Prime Minister Imran Khan as well as the military leadership under former Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Mir wrote that despite supporting Qazi Faez Isa during that period, he was disappointed by the former chief justice’s conduct after assuming office. He stated, “When the reference was filed against him, we stood by him and confronted the government and General Bajwa. Unfortunately, after becoming Chief Justice, he did things for which history will never forgive him.”

The presidential reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa, filed in 2019 over questions regarding overseas properties linked to his family, was widely criticized by sections of the legal community and journalists, who viewed it as an attack on judicial independence. The reference was later struck down by the Supreme Court.
After taking oath as Pakistan’s 29th Chief Justice in September 2023, Qazi Faez Isa faced criticism from some political commentators and legal observers over several rulings issued during his tenure, including decisions related to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s electoral symbol and reserved seats.
Hamid Mir’s latest remarks reflect his personal opinion and criticism of the former chief justice’s judicial tenure and do not represent any judicial finding or established fact regarding Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s conduct.
