Geo News Admits Editorial Error, Issues Apology After PEMRA Suspends Broadcasts

Islamabad: Geo News has formally acknowledged a serious editorial error and issued a public apology following the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) decision to suspend the channel’s broadcasts for 15 days over the airing of content related to a sensitive religious issue.

In an official statement, the network said it fully accepts responsibility for the incident and would make no attempt to justify or defend what had occurred. It described the mistake as entirely unintentional and said it did not reflect the channel’s editorial policy or ideological stance.

Geo News stated that as soon as the error was identified, the disputed content was removed immediately without any external pressure, describing the action as part of its institutional responsibility.

The broadcaster said it had issued show-cause notices to the reporter and members of the editorial committee involved in the incident. It added that a high-level internal inquiry had been launched and that disciplinary proceedings were underway against those found responsible in accordance with the organization’s policies.

According to the statement, the channel has also introduced stricter editorial safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future. These include strengthening the editorial approval process, adding additional layers of review before content is broadcast, and enhancing monitoring and oversight mechanisms to reduce the risk of human error.

Geo News further said it would intensify staff training, tighten internal editorial standards, and continue to uphold its longstanding policy of respecting Islam, the sentiments of the Muslim community, and religious values.

In its statement, the network also noted that it has, for decades, aired special programming during Ramadan, Hajj, Rabi’ al-Awwal, and Muharram, reflecting its commitment to promoting Islamic teachings and religious awareness. While acknowledging that human error cannot be justified, the channel said such mistakes may occur in the context of 24-hour live news operations and that the true measure of a responsible media organization lies in how it responds to and rectifies such errors.
