Cyber Crime Agency Launches Investigation Into Alleged False Campaign Against Easypaisa

Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched an investigation into the alleged spread of false and misleading information about Easypaisa Bank Limited across social media and various digital platforms.
According to media reports, numerous complaints were received over the past two weeks regarding online posts and content targeting Easypaisa, including claims about the bank’s financial condition and operational activities that were described as exaggerated and misleading.
The investigation was initiated following a formal complaint submitted by Naresh Kumar Arwani, Head of Country Litigation at Easypaisa Bank Limited. In the complaint, he requested legal action against individuals allegedly involved in creating and disseminating the content.
Arwani stated that deliberately spreading false information about a regulated financial institution not only harms the organization itself but can also undermine public confidence in Pakistan’s broader banking system. He emphasized that Easypaisa remains financially stable and fully operational, expressing confidence that the authorities would take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
Reports indicate that a senior NCCIA officer has been assigned to the case and has commenced proceedings under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. The investigation aims to identify all individuals involved in producing and distributing the disputed content.
According to the complaint, certain social media influencers and digital content creators allegedly circulated misleading claims regarding the bank’s financial stability and continuity of services. The content reportedly encouraged customers to withdraw their funds and created unnecessary panic among users.
Easypaisa has strongly denied all such allegations, describing them as false, baseless, and fake news. The bank reiterated that all of its services are functioning normally and that customer funds remain completely secure.
The institution acknowledged that some of its digital services experienced temporary technical disruptions during the period in question. However, it stressed that the issue was purely operational in nature and was resolved promptly. The bank maintained that the incident had no impact on customer deposits or its financial strength.
As Pakistan’s first mobile wallet, introduced in 2008, Easypaisa has grown into one of the country’s leading digital banking platforms under the supervision of the State Bank of Pakistan, serving more than 60 million registered users.
The bank reaffirmed its commitment to financial inclusion, customer protection, and operational resilience. It also urged customers to rely only on official information issued by the bank and authenticated regulatory announcements, while pledging to continue pursuing legal action against those responsible for spreading misinformation.
