Eating One Apple a Day May Help Protect Heart Health, Study Finds

Eating an apple every day may significantly improve heart health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, according to a new international study.

The research, conducted jointly by scientists from Harvard Medical School, University of California, and University of Reading, found that apples, along with other flavonol-rich foods, can play an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health.

Researchers said that apples, plums, blueberries, cherries, and green tea are rich in natural compounds known as flavonols, which have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease and cardiovascular-related deaths.

The study analyzed dietary data from more than 30,000 individuals to determine how much flavonol they consumed on a daily basis. The findings showed that fewer than 20 percent of people consume the recommended amount of flavonols needed to support optimal heart health.

According to the researchers, simply eating more fruits and vegetables may not be enough if the diet lacks foods that are particularly rich in flavonols. The study found that adequate flavonol intake was associated with a significantly lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

The researchers recommended incorporating at least one apple or a cup of green tea into the daily diet as an easy way to boost flavonol intake.

They also highlighted other flavonol-rich foods, including plums, blackberries, cherries, strawberries, and blueberries, as beneficial choices for heart health.

The findings were published in the scientific journal Food & Function and underscore the importance of selecting specific nutrient-rich foods rather than relying solely on overall fruit and vegetable consumption.

Health experts noted that while apples can contribute to a heart-healthy diet, they should be combined with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and other healthy lifestyle habits for the greatest benefit.
