UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns Amid Mounting Pressure Within Labour Party

London: British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has formally announced his resignation, citing growing pressure from within his own party and the need for a leadership transition.

In a televised address, Starmer confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of electing a new leader. He said nominations for the leadership contest will open on July 9.

According to international media reports, the resignation comes after months of declining public support, internal party dissatisfaction, and a series of political controversies that weakened Starmer’s standing among voters and Labour lawmakers. The pressure intensified following a decisive by-election victory by political rival Andy Burnham in northwest England, which fueled calls for a change in leadership.

Starmer, 63, a former lawyer, led the Labour Party to a historic landslide victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule and securing the party’s largest parliamentary majority since 1997. However, his government later faced declining popularity, poor local election results, and growing criticism over several policy decisions.

In his address, Starmer said he accepted the party’s verdict with “good grace” and pledged to support his successor during the transition period. He is expected to remain in office until a new Labour leader is chosen.

The announcement has formally launched the race to select the next Labour leader and Britain’s next prime minister, with Andy Burnham widely regarded as a leading contender for the position.
