Cancer Prevention Vaccine Developed, Clinical Trials to Begin Soon

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – Researchers from the University of Oxford and pharmaceutical company Moderna have jointly developed a new vaccine aimed at protecting individuals at high risk of developing bowel and ovarian cancers. The vaccine is currently awaiting clinical trials.

According to scientists, the vaccine is based on mRNA technology, which could potentially be used in the future to prevent other types of cancer as well.

The research primarily focuses on patients with Lynch syndrome, a hereditary condition that significantly increases the risk of several cancers, including those of the bowel, uterus, ovaries, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, and skin.

Statistics show that in England, approximately one in every 300 people carries Lynch syndrome, but only about 5% are aware of their condition. Each year, around 1,100 bowel cancer cases in England are linked to this syndrome.

The condition can increase the lifetime risk of bowel cancer by up to 80%.

The upcoming summer trial will investigate whether the vaccine, named mRNA-4194, can train the immune system to detect and eliminate precancerous cells before they develop into cancer.

Trial lead and Oxford research fellow Dr. David Church said the goal is to train the immune system to recognize abnormal cells and stop cancer before it develops.

He added that the mRNA vaccine acts like an instruction manual for the body, guiding the immune system to target and destroy precancerous cells at an early stage.
