Bangladesh Defeat Australia After 21 Years in Historic ODI Victory
Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – Bangladesh produced a stunning performance to defeat Australia by 86 runs in the first One Day International of the three-match series, securing their first ODI win against the Australians in 21 years.
The match, played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, was decided under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method due to rain interruptions, but Bangladesh dominated most phases of the game.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 284 for 8 in their allotted overs. Returning batter Mushfiqur Rahim played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 86 off 70 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 runs, while Tanzid Hasan also played a key supporting innings.
A crucial 96-run partnership between Shanto and Tanzid laid a strong foundation, followed by a solid middle-order effort that lifted Bangladesh to a strong total.
For Australia, Nathan Ellis claimed 3 wickets, but poor fielding cost the visitors dearly as they dropped four catches.
Chasing 285, Australia collapsed early in their innings. Opener Matt Short was dismissed for a golden duck, while Marnus Labuschagne managed just one run. Captain Josh Inglis and the rest of the batting lineup also failed to resist Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack.
Pacer Nahid Rana starred with the ball, taking 4 wickets and consistently bowling at speeds exceeding 150 km/h. Mushfiqur Rahim also contributed with 2 wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.
Australia’s only notable resistance came from Cameron Green (52) and Alex Carey (47), but it was not enough to prevent collapse. At the time of interruption due to rain, Australia were 191 for 9, and Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method.
This marks only Bangladesh’s second-ever ODI win against Australia. Their previous victory came in 2005 in Cardiff, while this is their first home ODI win against the Australian side, making it a historic milestone in Bangladesh cricket history.
