Government, PPP Likely to Hold Budget Consultations Today Ahead of Federal Budget

The government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are expected to hold crucial consultations today regarding the upcoming federal budget, as both sides seek consensus on key financial and fiscal matters.
A PPP delegation, led by President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, is expected to meet with a government team. Prior to the meeting, President Zardari will hold discussions with the party’s negotiation committee, which includes Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Murad Ali Shah, Naveed Qamar, and Sherry Rehman.
Sources said the timing of the meeting between the PPP and the government delegation will be finalized following the party’s internal consultations. Reports indicate that the federal government is seeking approximately Rs1.7 trillion in funds from the provinces as part of its fiscal planning.
Speaking on a television program, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said discussions are currently focused on a key financial target essential for the budget framework. He noted that preparing the budget would remain challenging until sufficient resources are identified to meet that target.
Rana Sanaullah expressed optimism that the government and the PPP would be able to reach a mutually acceptable understanding on budget-related matters.
The consultations are being closely watched, as cooperation between the ruling coalition and the PPP could play a significant role in shaping the federal budget and ensuring its smooth passage through parliament.
