ISLAMABAD: The United States has returned more than 450 historical and cultural artifacts to Pakistan under a bilateral agreement aimed at preserving cultural heritage.
An exhibition showcasing the recovered artifacts was held in Islamabad, where officials highlighted the importance of protecting and restoring stolen antiquities. According to the US Embassy, Washington has so far returned over 450 artifacts to Pakistan, valued at approximately $23 million.
Speaking at the exhibition titled “Legacy Returns Home,” US representative S. Paul said that every sculpture and artifact displayed in the gallery carries a unique history and cultural significance.
US Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapoor stated that 514 Pakistani antiquities had been recovered and returned over the past 10 years. He added that the recovered items are collectively valued at nearly $23 million.
Federal Minister for Culture Aurangzeb Khichi praised the efforts of the US government and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, calling the return of the stolen artifacts a commendable achievement.
Among the 150 artifacts displayed at the Islamabad Museum in Sir Syed Memorial are Buddha statues, Gandhara masterpieces, sculptures, and rare objects dating back nearly 4,000 years.
The US Department of Homeland Security has played a key role in preventing the theft and smuggling of cultural heritage items by intercepting valuable antiquities before they enter the American market.
