Ancient Quran Manuscript Discovered at Birmingham University Library, Possibly Dating Back to Early Islamic Era

Islamabad (Khabar Desk) — A centuries-old Quranic manuscript discovered at the University of Birmingham library in the United Kingdom has drawn significant attention from scholars, as it is considered among the oldest surviving copies of the Holy Quran.

According to research conducted by the University of Oxford, the handwritten manuscript is estimated to have been produced between 568 and 645 CE, with a 95.4% probability supporting this dating.
Experts note that this period closely overlaps with the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ or the early years following his passing, suggesting the parchment used may have existed during his lifetime.
The manuscript is written in “Hijazi script,” one of the earliest forms of Arabic writing, known for its distinctive slanted style. It contains verses from Surah Al-Kahf, Surah Maryam, and Surah Taha.
The ancient manuscript is preserved at the Cadbury Research Library of the University of Birmingham, where it continues to be studied for its historical and religious significance.
