US Defense Chief Says Ceasefire Holds, Warns Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Washington: US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has stated that a ceasefire with Iran remains in place, while warning Tehran against imposing any form of control or taxation over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, Hegseth said US naval forces are maintaining a strong presence in the region and have effectively blocked Iranian port operations. He added that vessels coming from Iran have been forced to turn back, though US forces are not required to enter Iranian territorial waters or the Strait itself.
He described the current operation, referred to as “Project Freedom Epic Fury,” as temporary and separate, launched under directives from former President Donald Trump. Hegseth stressed that Iran would not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and accused Tehran of engaging in what he called “international extortion.”
According to Hegseth, US naval deployment aims to ensure uninterrupted commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any attempt to target merchant vessels would be met with a strong response. He also said efforts are underway with cargo companies to clear hundreds of ships reportedly affected by disruptions in the region.
General Dan Caine said Iran is deliberately targeting neighboring countries and confirmed that US forces are prepared to resume military operations if ordered. He added that the objective of the mission is to restore free commercial navigation in the Strait and counter small boat and drone threats attributed to Iran.
US officials reiterated that maintaining open sea lanes remains a top priority amid rising regional tensions.
