Gujranwala Mass Transit System Approved, Major Urban Transport Project Near Finalization

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has formally approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, marking a significant step toward introducing a modern urban transport network in Gujranwala.
The project aims to provide residents with fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel facilities. Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister directed authorities to connect all parts of the city with the metro train through a feeder bus service, ensuring an integrated transport system.
Officials briefed the meeting that the system is being designed to accommodate approximately 2.6 million passengers daily. The route will span 31.5 kilometers from Ghakhar to Eminabad, with a completion timeline of 12 months.
Under the plan, 24 stations will be constructed, including two underground stations. Additionally, a 17 to 19-kilometer section will be built underground to improve traffic flow, along with the construction of two tunnel sections.
Authorities also announced that solar systems will be installed at all stations and depots to reduce energy costs and ensure environmental sustainability. Depots will be established in Garrajakh, Chand Da Qila, and Gondlanwala.
The project further includes the construction of a 62-kilometer drainage system along both sides of the route and the establishment of a modern command and control center to monitor operations.
Maryam Nawaz said the project would be a “remarkable gift” for the people of Gujranwala and would transform the city’s transport culture. She directed authorities to expedite work so that citizens can benefit from the facility as soon as possible.
The approval of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System is being seen as a major milestone in urban development, expected to ease traffic congestion and modernize the city’s transportation infrastructure.
