Sindh Accelerates Water Sector Reforms and Irrigation Modernization Efforts

Karachi: The Government of Sindh has intensified efforts to reform the water sector and modernize the irrigation system, aiming to improve water management and strengthen agricultural productivity.
A key meeting was held under the chairmanship of Jam Khan Shoro, Provincial Minister for Irrigation and Planning, to review progress on the World Bank-supported SWAT project. The meeting was attended by a World Bank delegation, including Task Team Leader Francois Onimus, Senior Water Resources Specialist Zelalem Mekonnen, and Senior Water Resources Management Specialist Heba Ahmed.
Officials such as Mansoor Memon, Managing Director of SIDA (Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority), and Nazir Ahmed from PCMU, along with other relevant officers, also participated and briefed the meeting on ongoing projects.
According to the spokesperson, discussions focused on drafting a new water law to improve water governance, as well as developing a comprehensive water plan for Sindh. The meeting also reviewed initiatives involving the use of modern technology, canal rehabilitation, and system upgrades to ensure efficient water distribution and reduce wastage.
Speaking on the occasion, Jam Khan Shoro stated that work on gate replacement at Guddu Barrage and Sukkur Barrage is progressing rapidly under the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project, which will significantly enhance water delivery systems.
He emphasized that the provincial government is taking serious steps to ensure effective water utilization, promote sustainable water management, and strengthen agriculture and the economy. He added that these reforms will help Sindh tackle climate challenges and build long-term resilience.
