Sindh Government Restores Deceased Quota, Approves Merit-Based Review of Pending Cases

Karachi: The Sindh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, has approved the restoration of the deceased (fauty) quota and decided to review pending cases on merit.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister House, where several key policy matters were also approved, including reforms in employment policy, agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, and financial governance.
Officials said that under the decision, cases submitted under the deceased quota scheme before September 2024 will be considered and processed on merit if they meet all required conditions.
The cabinet was informed that the deceased quota policy was introduced in 2002. However, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, in its judgment dated 26 September 2024, declared all related legal provisions discriminatory and ultra vires, leading the Sindh government to temporarily suspend processing of such cases.
After detailed deliberation, the cabinet decided that applications submitted before September 2024 may be reviewed in accordance with the law and processed by the relevant departments on a merit basis.
In addition to this, the cabinet also approved the release of funds for the upgradation of Rohri Railway Station and granted authorization to the Sindh Bank for handling Letters of Credit (LCs) related to imports. It also approved transferring the jurisdiction of Lyari Nadi to TMC Lyari as part of broader administrative reforms.
