Controversy in Balochistan Assembly Over Fatiha for Alleged Police Killing of Israr Qalandrani; Government Member Walks Out After CM Opposition

Quetta: A heated debate erupted in the Balochistan Assembly over the proposed Fatiha (prayers) for Israr Qalandrani, who was reportedly killed by police. During the session, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti opposed the proposal, stating that while the incident was regrettable and under investigation, Qalandrani was a criminal, making a Fatiha in the esteemed assembly inappropriate.

The Chief Minister’s remarks triggered strong reactions from opposition members. Provincial Assembly member Agha Umar Ahmed Zai condemned the CM’s stance, arguing that human compassion should extend to all citizens regardless of their past. He warned that he would walk out in protest if the Fatiha was not allowed. True to his word, he left the assembly, heightening political tensions.

Other opposition members criticized the government, emphasizing that at least a prayer should be offered for any deceased person and calling for an impartial investigation to reveal the facts. Government members, however, supported the Chief Minister, citing assembly rules and traditions that Fatiha should not be conducted for individuals facing serious allegations.

Investigations into Qalandrani’s death are ongoing, with authorities stating that a report will clarify the circumstances. The Chief Minister reiterated that full legal proceedings would be conducted and that responsible parties would face action if wrongdoing is confirmed.
