Trump’s Remark on Macron’s Wife Sparks Controversy, Risks Straining US-Europe Ties

Washington: US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy after making a sarcastic remark about French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife during a private event.
According to media reports, Trump made the comment during a private lunch at the White House while criticizing NATO allies for not supporting the United States in a potential conflict involving Iran. Referring to Macron, Trump said, “I called France, Macron, whose wife treats him very badly.”
The remark appeared to reference an earlier viral video allegedly showing Brigitte Macron behaving harshly toward the French president. However, Macron had previously dismissed the clip as part of a misleading campaign.
Trump also criticized France’s response to US requests for support in the Gulf region, claiming that Macron offered assistance only after the conflict rather than during it. He reiterated the point sarcastically, saying immediate help was needed, not post-war cooperation.
The US president further lashed out at NATO, calling it a “paper tiger” and questioning whether the alliance would stand by the United States in the event of a major global conflict.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted that Washington may reassess its ties with NATO after the Iran conflict.
Experts warn that Trump’s remarks could deepen tensions between the United States and its European allies at a time when the Middle East situation is already highly volatile.
