Chaman-Quetta Train Service Suspended for Eid, Stranding Thousands of Poor Passengers; Transport Mafia Profits Amid Public Outrage

Chaman/Quetta: The only affordable passenger train service between Chaman and Quetta has been suspended for the past week, causing severe hardship for thousands of passengers trying to return to their hometowns for Eid‑ul‑Fitr.
Railway authorities cited rising fuel prices as the reason for the suspension and announced that the service may remain closed in the future. This decision has sparked widespread anger among the public, as the train was a crucial and economical means of travel for nearly 300 passengers per journey. Many commuters criticized the railway administration for first increasing ticket prices and now halting the service during the most important holiday season, calling it a blatant injustice against low‑income travelers.
Taking advantage of the suspension, transport operators and private van owners have reportedly hiked fares arbitrarily, charging excessive amounts from travelers during the Eid rush. The poor condition of the Quetta‑Chaman highway has further compounded travel difficulties, making the journey longer, riskier, and more uncomfortable.
Local political parties and community leaders in Chaman have met with the district railway authorities demanding the immediate restoration of the train service. However, railway officials have not provided any positive response so far, increasing the frustration and despair of passengers hoping to reach their homes for the festival.
