Bus Owner Challenges E-Challan Over Alleged Speed Violation, Questions System Accuracy

KARACHI — Questions have emerged over the performance of the city’s multi-billion rupee e-challan system after a bus owner challenged a speed violation ticket in court, alleging errors in the automated system.

According to the petitioner, the speedometer of the bus manufactured by their company has a maximum limit of 120 km/h, meaning the vehicle cannot exceed this speed. However, traffic cameras installed in the city reportedly recorded the bus traveling at 160 km/h, prompting an e-challan to be issued.

The petition was filed by the bus owner’s association president, Farooq Ahmed, through his lawyer, Munsif Jan Advocate. The lawsuit names several officials as respondents, including the Secretary of Transport, the Road Transport Authority (RTA), and the DIG Traffic, among others.

The petitioner requested the court to order a detailed audit and inspection of the city’s speed detection cameras and tracking system by impartial experts to verify the accuracy of the issued challans.

Following an initial hearing, the court issued notices to the relevant authorities regarding the allegedly incorrect e-challan, signaling further scrutiny of the automated speed enforcement system.
