US Issues New Travel Advisory for Pakistan; Orders Departure of Non-Essential Staff from Lahore and Karachi Consulates

Washington: The United States Department of State has issued a new travel advisory for Pakistan on March 3, 2026, directing non-essential US government personnel and their families at the consulates in Lahore and Karachi to depart the country due to security concerns. The advisory noted that there is no change in the status of the US Embassy in Islamabad.

The advisory cites ongoing risks of drone and missile attacks following rising tensions between the United States and Iran since February 28, which have disrupted commercial flights and prompted precautionary measures.

It also highlights the continued threat of terrorism within Pakistan, including attacks by militant groups in various regions, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, though incidents have also occurred in major cities such as Karachi and Islamabad. Potential targets include transport hubs, hotels, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, schools, places of worship, and government buildings.

The advisory warns against participating in unauthorized protests, as such gatherings may attract security scrutiny. US citizens are advised to avoid posting content on social media perceived as critical of the government or military due to potential arrest risks. Internet and mobile services may also be disrupted during demonstrations.

Regarding crime, the advisory notes that security conditions can change rapidly. While larger cities have relatively better security resources, petty crimes like pickpocketing, bag snatching, and mobile phone theft remain common.

US personnel in Pakistan face movement restrictions, requiring armored vehicles and armed security in some areas, with travel outside Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi needing special permission. Some consular services are limited in certain regions.

Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been designated Level Four (extremely dangerous), and travel to these areas is strongly discouraged. Risks include terrorism, kidnappings, active militant groups, and armed clashes near the Line of Control.

US citizens are advised to monitor local news, avoid crowds and protests, refrain from displaying valuables, and have emergency plans in place. Registration in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is recommended to allow the embassy to contact US citizens in emergencies.
