The claim, widely circulated online, suggested that the downed aircraft was either an F-16 or a JF-17, with videos and images presented as “evidence.” Afghan media outlet TOLO News reported on February 27, 2026, that Afghan forces targeted a Pakistani plane entering their airspace, but the report did not provide details on the aircraft’s type or destruction.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed border operations but did not claim any Pakistani jet had been downed. Independent fact checks, including by British broadcaster BBC, verified that the viral images were unrelated to the current situation. One widely shared photo was from a 2021 Russian plane crash in Turkey, misused in the current context.

Defense experts and open-source analysts noted inconsistencies in the serial numbers of aircraft shown in viral videos and highlighted that modern jets typically operate at altitudes where ground-based rockets cannot easily target them.
Pakistani officials stated that all air operations along the border were successful and that all jets returned safely to their bases. Another misleading report claiming the capture of a Pakistani pilot in Jalalabad was also debunked by Afghan media itself.
Authorities have advised the public not to trust unverified claims or viral content related to military actions and to rely only on official sources for accurate information.
