Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Resigns Amidst Student Protests; Flies to India
Dhaka: In the wake of nationwide student protests against the quota system, Bangladesh’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has resigned. The resignation follows a significant civil disobedience movement sparked by the student demonstrations.
According to global news agencies, students from across the country had planned a march towards Dhaka today, leading thousands to gather outside Hasina’s residence. Due to the escalating public pressure and protests, Sheikh Hasina submitted her resignation and departed for India with her sister, Sheikh Rehana, via a special helicopter. She was not allowed to record a farewell speech before her departure.
Indian media reports that Sheikh Hasina and her sister arrived in New Delhi and are expected to travel to Finland. It is alleged that the military had given Hasina just 45 minutes to resign. Efforts to record a farewell address to the nation before moving to a secure location were thwarted.
At the time of her departure, thousands of enraged protesters had stormed her official residence, Ganabhaban, causing damage and reportedly looting the premises. Sheikh Hasina had already left for India before the protesters could escalate their actions further.
Currently, millions of demonstrators are still on the streets. In response, the Chief of Army Staff has urged the public to remain peaceful and has promised to address them shortly.
It is worth noting that over 300 people have been killed in the violent protests against the quota system in employment, with thousands injured and several police stations set on fire.
