Flood Warning Issued for Balochistan’s Koh-e-Suleiman Region Amid Rising Water Levels

Quetta:The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an urgent warning regarding severe flooding in the Koh-e-Suleiman mountain range due to increasing water flow. According to a PDMA spokesperson, ongoing rains in the Koh-e-Suleiman area have caused a significant rise in water flow, leading to the likelihood of extremely high floodwaters in the rivers, with particular concern for the Shirani and Zhob districts.

The Director General of PDMA has alerted the Commissioner of Zhob and Shirani about the situation, instructing them to keep emergency control rooms staffed and ready. The PDMA has also advised that Rescue 1122 disaster response teams be on high alert, ensuring that ample stocks of fuel for operations are maintained. Additionally, the authority has emphasized the need to keep the public informed about the evolving situation, evacuate homes and livestock from flood-prone areas, and provide necessary amenities in flood relief camps.

Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to exercise special caution and avoid crossing rivers if water levels rise. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recommended that the public download the NDMA disaster alert mobile app for timely updates and guidance. The NDMA has instructed provincial disaster management authorities and local administrations to remain vigilant and take necessary actions to protect vulnerable populations.

In Jharl Magsi and Gandawah, severe rains in the regional mountains have raised concerns about potential flooding. The administration has urged residents in these areas to take precautions against flooding and stay informed about weather conditions, particularly at night.

Despite warnings of torrential rains, there has been a lack of organized response at the governmental level. The Meteorological Department had previously forecasted severe rains. Recent heavy rains have damaged bridges on the M-8 road between Khuzdar and Shadadkot, leading to the submergence of alternate routes. Travelers on the Khuzdar to Shadadkot road have been advised to avoid travel.

In response to the monsoon rains, the Khuzdar district administration has established an emergency control room, canceling staff leave and directing relevant departments to remain on alert. The control room is equipped with machinery to handle any emergencies, and the public has been urged to contact emergency numbers in case of urgent situations.

The continuous rain, which has lasted for over thirty hours, has resulted in flooding in the Kadd Nadi and riverine areas, with the river Porali also experiencing a surge. The rains have brought relief from the heat, with the weather becoming more pleasant and cooler. However, the city has been plagued by standing water and mud, creating additional challenges for residents.
