Famous Indian Comedian Rajpal Yadav Sent to Tihar Jail Over Check Bounce Cases

NEW DELHI: Renowned Indian comedian and actor Rajpal Yadav has been transferred to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for an extension to surrender.
Legal experts and Tihar authorities clarified that Yadav’s future release will be conditional on clearing his outstanding dues. The actor, convicted in multiple check bounce cases, had no choice but to surrender after the court denied further leniency.
According to media reports, Rajpal Yadav presented himself before Tihar Jail authorities on Thursday afternoon. The Delhi High Court had dismissed his request to extend the self-surrender period granted under suspension of sentence, stating that he had already been given multiple opportunities and no further leniency would be allowed.
The case dates back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav and his wife were accused of taking a loan of ₹5 crore from Morali Project to produce the film *Uta Pata Lapata*. Initially, the actor had assured repayment of ₹8 crore, which was later settled at ₹7 crore. However, seven issued cheques bounced, prompting criminal proceedings.
Court records indicate that in seven separate cases, Rajpal Yadav was ordered to pay ₹1.35 crore per case. The High Court’s order marks the legal conclusion of a long saga involving financial default, misuse of judicial leniency, and broken promises.
